Rants

Remembrance Day

Remembrence Day in Harrogte was a dissappointing affair to say the least.

Last year, the Police, Fire Brigade and Menwith Hill workers along with several other groups.

This year, the Police claimed that there where not enough Officers with Marching experience to take part. Which, to be honest is a rather unbelievable excuse. One lone police officer made up their contingent. (As reported by the Yorkshre Post here)

The only groups to show where:

  1. Sea Cadets
  2. Air force Cadets
  3. Army Foundation College (Who have also cut back on the events they attend)
Which to my mind is a pathetic turnout.
I’m currently working through the images I took. It was a foggy day and it played hell with my cameras metering system, many shots overexposed, and by the time I worked it out, it was too late to retake many images. The net result is that I need to over edit many of the shots. (Cabridge in Colour has a great article here on how to take shots in fog)
Only other issues I have are that of composition. I really have to slow down, way to many shots where various parts of people are cut off, and people half in the frame. I really kick myself when I review the shots at home.
I’ll see whats worth posting later on.

Critique

I was browsing around Photocamel earlier and came across a thread (http://photocamel.com/forum/landscape-travel/145384-small-fall.html).

The poster placed an image that he had used a diorama style shot. Which, to be honest really does not work overly well with the subject. Some people critiqued this, and gave their thoughts on the image. In post 6, he rather sternly rebukes the comments made in earlier posts

Having been a photographer for 30+ years, I would like to think that I am fairly well versed in the do’s and don’ts with regards to f-stop, aperture and composition.

—-

FWIW, it’s bad form to critique a photograph without asking first,. This is especially true in a public forum and where there are certain artistic liberties at play that one may, or may not understand.

Now I take an interest in the thread. All postings to Social sites, be they forums, flickr, private websites etc are open to public critique. You have to expect that when posting in full public view. What would art be if people did not discuss it? It would be dull and boring.

I pointed this out in my post (Post 11)

I disagree. People are free to express an opinion, critique it if they wish. You consent to that by making it public display.

You dont have to ask. people will always critique. How boring would the art world be, if no one critiqued? Art Should, and always will promote discussion. Whether the artist wants it or not.

To which he posts rather a childish reply. He offers to go to the website I’ve linked in my signature and critique some of the photos on my website.

Truth be told, I’d love him to. To learn what others think, what the images say to them is what I crave. It makes me think, gives me ideas to improve on photography. And I fully accept that others will view my photography, discuss it, think about it. Is that not the purpose of all art? To promote discussion, thought and critique?

Would Monet’s work be what it is today without people discussing it? I think not.

I’ll repeat one last time:

Art Should, and always will promote discussion. Whether the artist wants it or not.

Of Gods and Science

On the long walk home, my mind wanders. With the rythmic roar of the traffic, my mind went to religion.

Specificly the case of is religion still has a place in the modern world. Thousands of years ago, humans did’nt know why their crops died, why did the floods come? They had no other idea other than a supieror force was playing with their lives. So religion was born to give people the reasons for these events. Its Human nature to have reasons. And that nature led to science explaining more and more of these events, eroding the grip religion had on the population.

This is why the religious institutions where hell bent on dismissing science as heresy, trying to destroy all scientific research and generally being repressive as possible. But Human nature always wins. People grew to live with both religion and science. But science was always there, gradually explaining all lifes mysteries.

Is religion defunct? No, its not. It gives people a sense of worth, community, identity and continuation, even after death. Long after science explains the last mysteries of the universe, people will need the other comforts religion brings. Be it Muslamic, Christianity or Buddism or any other religion, it will never pass. It will wain and grow, but religion will always be with us. For good or for worse.

Forestry Sell Off

I signed the petition, I wrote to my MP. I’ve done alot to show my opinion on the governments cock-handed plans to sell off our forests into private hands.

And today, I notice our MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough voted voted against a rethink of the sell-off plans. So, again I dispatched a simple email asking him to justify this.

To Andrew Jones MP
Subject you voted to sell our forests?
Message Dear Sir

I am concerned that you voted against the motion calling for a rethink of plans to sell-off our forests.

Please could you explain to me why you are backing a privatisation plan which is supported by so few people, and for which there is no economic benefit?

I shall look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

M Thompson

I never voted for him, but now is the time for me to start voting, and I would never vote for this guy, or any party that promotes these thoughts of removing public rights.
Generally, I dont trust politicians, they all are master manipulators and as useless as a room full of Bankers. But this is one issue I’m not prepared to stand by and watch.

please, consider going and signing the online petition to show your support for the campaign http://www.38degrees.org.uk/forests

American Human Rights

Is it odd that America strives for human rights in other countries around the world, when their house is clearly not in order. Take the case of Bradley Manning, the guy who gave WikiLeaks all their files. (or most of them).

Put on consistant suicide watch, his routine consists of:

Life for PFC Manning, however, is not much better now that he has been returned to POI watch. Like suicide risk, he is held in solitary confinement. For 23 hours per day, he will sit in his cell. The guards will check on him every five minutes by asking him if he is okay. PFC Manning will be required to respond in some affirmative manner. At night, if the guards cannot see him clearly, because he has a blanket over his head or is curled up towards the wall, they will wake him in order to ensure that he is okay. He will receive each of his meals in his cell. He will not be allowed to have a pillow or sheets. He will not be allowed to have any personal items in his cell. He will only be allowed to have one book or one magazine at any given time to read. The book or magazine will be taken away from him at the end of the day before he goes to sleep. He will be prevented from exercising in his cell. If he attempts to do push-ups, sit-ups, or any other form of exercise he will be forced to stop. He will receive one hour of exercise outside of his cell daily. The guards will take him to an empty room and allow him to walk. He will usually just walk in figure eights around the room until his hour is complete. When he goes to sleep, he will be required to strip down to his underwear and surrender his clothing to the guards.

I’m sure that you will agree thats harsh by any standards. While that does come from his lawyer, it no doubt contains some truth.

More information on the complaint as raised by his Lawyer can be found here

Fountain trip woman calls in lawyers

A Pennsylvania woman who fell into a shopping centre fountain while she was texting is considering legal action after footage of the accident was posted online.

Cathy Cruz Marrero says she’s extremely embarrassed about the footage being released. But who the fook knew it was her? You cant see her face in the footage, and the only way people Know it was her, is because she went on National  television and said it was her. She is jus out to get money. Simple. Money grabbing bint.

Driving in snow and Ice

You’ve seen it on the news. You’ve heard your co workers moan. Driving in the snow is a skill no one appears to know. Cars just dumped where they finish skidding to, people pushing cars with wheels just skidding over the ice. There is no reason for it, everyone should now how to drive in snow, so here are my tips for safe driving in snow.

Driving safely on icy roads

  1. Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
  2. Set off in second gear, Forget about 1st gear.
  3. Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.Try and use engine braking where possible.
  4. Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
  5. Keep your lights and windshield clean. ALL YOUR WINDSHIELD. NO SNOW AT ALL.
  6. Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills. but watch out for too much power being sent tp the wheels.
  7. Don’t use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
  8. Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
  9. Make slow, deliberate moves. Steer gently
  10. Don’t assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.
  11. Watch out for idiots who are driving like nutters and especially those who have not cleared their windscreen

If your rear wheels skid…

  1. Take your foot off the accelerator.
  2. Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they’re sliding right, steer right.
  3. If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
  4. If you have standard brakes, pump them gently.
  5. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse — this is normal, if somewhat unnerving

If your front wheels skid…

  1. Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don’t try to steer immediately.
  2. As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go, release the clutch, and accelerate gently.

If you get stuck…

  1. Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper.
  2. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.
  3. Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out.
  4. Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.
  5. Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction.
  6. Try rocking the vehicle.  Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you’re in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

Estate Agents

Estate Agents. Don’t you love them? Take a couple of photos of the property, add some standard hyperbole description, think of a price that will give them the most commission, place an advert and then wait for the buyer to come to them. Once a buyer is found, pass it to the solicitors and wait for the money to roll in. You’ll only hear from them after that if they start getting anxious that they’re going to have to wait too long for their commission.

A Wanted weekend

After what was possibly the worst day I’ve ever had at work, I was really looking forward to this weekend.

RestingI went off on Saturday, determined to get some better shots of the Deer. Another photographer was up there, with a huge Canon, and the biggest lense I’ve ever seen outside of a sports stadium.

Red Deer StagRutting season is more or less over and the Stags are taking it easy. still chasing the occasional buck chancing his luck, but for the most part their just chilling.

Then in the evening, I went to the Fireworks display on the stray, which to be perfectly honest, was a disappointing affair. But my god there was alot of people there. And as normal, people where dumping their cars wherever they could spreading chaos in their wake.

Leaving the stray area was a nightmare. The largest roundabout in Harrogate, the empress just turned into a random free for all, as people jostled to get on and off it. It was just a complete nightmare. I decided I wanted no part of that and went left back toward the fireworks and down North Park Road. Getting home  I loaded the fireworks shots into lightroom, and was a little disapointed. I chose to ue my Sigma 10-20mm, and that was a error, I was a little to far away from the fireworks, and most of the frames where overly blah. I loaded several of the shots into Phostshop, and arranged them into a single layerd document. and fidlled with them until I had something I liked. So all was’nt lost.

Harrogate Fireworks

I dont know what I’m doing on Sunday, but I’ll sure as hell not waste the day.  Might actually go to Leeds or maybe York and do some people type shots. I enjoy street photography, but my old bug bear of nerves always gets me when I see a good shot.

And, I’ll watch out for Police speed traps :)

Keyboards people!

One of my biggest gripes. People not using keyboards. They are for more than simply entering text. You can do anything and more with a keyboard than you can with a mouse.

In the time it takes people I work with to end a call, click new mail, write it out, and move the mouse all the way to send, I can do it in half the time. Having to locate your mouse pointer alone takes ages.

Learn to use keyboard shortcuts, you’ll thank me later.

So my phone rings and I answer it. A lady with a really thick Indian accent speaks and announces she is from my Credit Card company. I owe them a payement and am slightly over my limit.

This is rougly how the conversation went.

Call Drone: “Can I take your date of birth for security?”

Me: “No.”

Call Drone: “I need to take you through security sir, to prove I’m talking to the account holder”

Me: “Thats fine, but how do I know who you are, you phoning me from abroad, my phone number is public knowledge, and the fact I hold a credit card to your company is easy to get. Can you tell me the last 4 digits of my card number, the date of my last payment and amount?”

Call Drone: “Sir, I cannot tell you without first taking you through security”

Call Drone: “So you expect me to release information to prove who I am, but you cant prove who you are until I do?”

Call Drone: “That is correct”

Me: “Ok, whatever you need to say, please put it in writing. bye bye”

About 3 minutes later they tried again. Unfortunately, I could not understand a word this one spoke, his accent was just to thick. I deal with alot of banks in my job, and if you deviate from the answers they expect to their scripts, they get lost flusterd and dont quite know how to proceed. It can be quite funny at times. Other times it can be quite sad.

AOL / News Corp interested in Yahoo!

Well, if that happens, I’m never using a Yahoo! service again. Anything to do with Rupert Murdoch is well out for me.

Popes Visit.

Pope Pius IX

Image via Wikipedia

Oh my god. The “State” visit of a alledged Head of State, ie the Pope. Its all over the news? Who the Hell cares? Can he really be called a head of state? You dont need visas’ or to show your passport in Rome, and you can walk round it in less than a hour. He really isn’t a Head Of State.

He seems to be causing more problems and congestion by his visit and he doesn’t have to pay the CC … WTF?! If anything he should have to pay MORE not get away with it
We don’t stop traffic for politicians, stars, the wealthy , the poor..

So why should we afford this old twat such a lot of reverence?

> He doesn’t speak for God – the bible states clearly that nobody on earth is receiving personal messages, in fact even the disciples didn’t get to speak to JC after he ascended.

> He openly approves of paedophilia – witness his inability to keep his own clergy away from the altar boys and runaways; reshuffling his ‘misguided servants of God’ to different areas when they’re caught

> He openly discriminates against women – witness the ease with which women are ordained to the ministry.

> He openly glorifies himself above God – witness the pomp and ceremony that accompanies his every move

> He openly makes himself ‘part of this world, having earthly bindings and trappings’. Yes that’s from the bible folks; witness the opulence he surrounds himself with

> among many other points.

So again, I ask.. why should he get such reverence?? And how much was spent shutting down London for a day, not to mention the cost of Policing the “Event”.

I must stop pontificating.

New Nikon D3100

Nikon D90 digital SLR camera

Image via Wikipedia

Important Edit

I might of got this just a little wrong. The D3100 is’nt a D90 replacement, the “D95″ is’nt expected to be released for a little while yet.

The Nikon D3100 is the replacement for the D90, which is now 2 years old.

Will I upgrade? No way. for several reasons.

  1. No drive motor. Which means less lenses can be used.
  2. No top mounted LCD Screen

Point 1 is critical. That would kill off a good few lenses, including the Nifty Fifty, 105mm Sigma macro in my case, and a huge number of other exceptional lenses.

Point 2, I’ve come to love the top mounted LCD, its so handy to glance at without having to press buttons to get into the menu, find which item you want. Its just a quick glance at the top LCD to get the information you need.

Those two points alone helped me decide the upgrade from the D80 to the D90.

It has a larger sensor, but only by a couple of MegaPixels, nothing to really worry about, a improved Expeed processor, and most of the other improvements are for Movie mode, which has absolutely no use to me. As I pointed out in a earlier rant.

To me, it feels like a sideways step, with a loss of balance backwards. Its really not worth the upgrade. My D90 has many many more shutter releases to come, and I’m sure I’ll be using it for years yet.

Live movie modes

I’m not a fan of live view on Nikon, even less so of movie mode.

Movies should be left In cam corder land. And stay right there. There is no place for it on a DSLR however the Market is clearly shifting toward sticking it on what ever they can.

Live view however, does have a use. Using the camera in awkward angles, up high or down low. But without those fine grained controls gained through the viewfinder, I’d much rather lie down on the ground to get the shot than use it.

A good day

Today marks the last time ever I will have to trek over to the hell hole that is the Job Center, or Job Center Plus as its called now. Quite what the plus is for I have no idea.

Although its vastly improved from the last time I visited, where you where separated from the adviser by a sheet of perspex, and had a wooden bench to sit on, its still a demoralizing experience walking into the Job Center. First off, you have to navigate around the chavs that gather round the front doors pufifng on Lambert and Butler. Now you have the nasty “welcome” agent, who really just wants be be somewhere else, anywhere, just not here. Now you have to sit on some seats with questionable stains. And if your really unlucky, the guy next to you has spent his benefits on white lightning and forgot about washing.

Just watching the people come and go, the dregs of society, and the unfortunates placed not by their own fault in the lines of the unemployed. You can just tell who is there because they cant be arsed to work, and turn up only to claim their benefits and post drivel as Youtube comments.

Watching the people who work in the Job center is also interesting. Most of them seem to either be doing nothing at all, or just randomly walking around moving paper from desk to desk. And then when you eventually get to speak to someone, who really could not care less about what your saying, they complain that one person phoned in sick, and that made them exceptionaly busy. Well, why dos’nt the blonde bint at that desk do something rather than filing her nails, or that guy stop trying to appear busy by walking around with paper aimlessly to do something? It really would not surprise me if people justified their jobs by creating paper work, to ensure paperwork has been completed in a self perpetuating circle.

But no longer will I have to ponder their mental ability while I wait for my name to be called by the poor sap upholding the Governments whims anymore.

Another pointless emergency call.

A recent post on Grough.co.uk got my hackles up a little. Mountain rescue were called out to aid a walker who was “Exhausted” and could not walk any further. Well, boo hoo your tired. Thats no reason to dial 999 and waste the time of the Rescue services.

Patterdale, and the other mountain rescue teams give their time and effort for nothing, they are volunteers. It’s about time that people got realistic with their abilities and planned routes according to their abilities. What if there had been a real emergency, such as a Heart attack on the mountain, and the team couldn’t get there as they where busy with this guy?

He was seen by the ambulance staff after having been brought down the mountain and told he was fit and well, and told to walk back to his camp site.

In all honesty, I believe that people should be charged for rescue, maybe the first £50 of the cost. I know that if I needed rescue, I would be happy to pay £50 for the help. You could include it as an Insurance, maybe a membership of the BMC would cover it.

How much do you value your life? Happy to pay £300 for a jacket, yet expect volunteers to come and rescue for free? I bet he is paying the AA/RAC for rescue services.

Come on! Gone are the days when enthusiasts volunteered to help fellow enthusiasts. Today is commercialization. If the MRT doesn’t wake up to this fact they’ll see a huge increase of they spare time doing more and more of these silly rescues.

But, you’ll get the liberals who’ll cry people will be scared to phone (conveniently forgetting it’ll probably be on an expensive mobile) the rescue services as it’ll be too pricey and they’ll be dead bodies lying all over the hills.

Virtual Radar

Look here for real time radar coverage of the UK Airspace. Currently very quiet due to the Ash cloud, few flights coming in from the West, but otherwise the crowded london skys are dead as a doornail.

I bet the people who live under the Heathrow corridor are loving this :)

London Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre

What is this? Is it something that suddenly came into being to deal with the current issue of this dust cloud from Iceland, brainchild of some Civil Servant somewhere, or, are they another government body everyone had forgotton about?

I’m imagining a dusty office buried in some university building where two old professors who are just round the corner from retirement spend the day with the crossword and pots of tea and occasionally (once every few months) an old teletype machine splutters into life. The only reason it’s still got funding is because nobody is in government is aware of it.

Busy Easter holidays

Well a busy few days I have had, but managed to cram in a few miles along the moor.

Friday saw me leave Thruscross and wander over the moor to Bolton Abbey, using the Dales way link. Nothing special in that but a nice wander over the moors watching the red kites hover and peering out for prey in the bracken. And what is it with Grouse? Every time i get a fright when they explode from the heather, making their noise amid much flapping of wings, i expect it, i know its going to happen yet i am surprised each and every time they burst out. I made a small detour just by Bolton Farm, to visit the trig point on Nabs edge. But one thing that troubled me was a sever pain in my right foot. The outside of the foot, just back from the toes and extending toward the ankle. It cut the walk short at Bolton abbey as I had intended to go further. Bolton abbey was awash with people, being the Easter break. Kids running around hunting Easter eggs, dogs barking at each other and the ducks fighting over the prime picnic table scraps. Quite a shock when you come down off the moor, having seen nothing but grouse and sheep for the last couple of hours.

On further investigation it turns out that the pain in my foot was due to tightness in the calf muscle, making my feet roll somewhat. So I have exercises from the physio to help with that. I just hope it remedies itself soon and not later.

Saturday I felt that my feet were better, they just felt rather bruised, so a nice amble around the local resivour, Fewston for four or five miles. Nice easy-going on the feet. And they felt absolutely fine. So back up with stretching out my calf muscles to avoid that happening again.

Monday I drove my parents up to see my grandfather, and my god, my mother is enough to make baby Jesus cry. “there’s a roundabout at the end of the road” I know mum, it’s been there for the last 15 years. “watch your speed” I was doing 65 in a 70. That “watch your speed” was said every time I passed anything on the motorway. “the speed limit is 50 here”. Gosh I guess that’s what all those signs with 50 on them mean.

I guess I better start planning a few routes around the local area to try out my feet a bit more and keep my calves in shape before they freeze up again.

Anyway, while I am here in Northumbria I’m off for a wander along the beach at Alnmouth. I could never resist a beach wander.

Facebook at it again

So faceslap are changing their Terms and conditions again, this time, giving the right to send your personnal information to “Partner” websites.

I for one dont like that change in anyway at all. Information, your information is to sent left right and center and you will have no say in the matter

That would mean that if you’re logged into Facebook and then visit a third party website, that site will be able to access the following:

  • your name
  • your profile picture
  • your gender
  • your friends and connections
  • your userid
  • any content shared using the “Everyone” privacy setting

In other words, you might visit a website and discover that it already knows who you are, your date of birth, where you live, who your friends are. All, without ever having given the site explicit permission to access that data.

Moor information can be gained from The Register

An employee at Heathrow airport has been given a harassment warning by police officers after he snuck a peek at one of his female coworkers when she accidentally walked through a full-body scanner.

Apparently that’s considered “misuse” of the scanners. Now whether this fellow intentionally misused the equipment for his own perverse kicks or whether he accidentally took a scan out of habit, the young lady was left very shaken:

I can’t bear to think about the body scanner thing. I’m totally traumatised. I’ve spoken to the police about it. I’m in too much of a state to go to work.

So how am I supposed to feel once I have to walk through one of these full-body scanners in most airports?

Joe Glenton

Is a coward plain and simple. He says he refused to go back to Afghanistan due to not believing in what he was fighting for. Instead of standing up and saying this, ripping up his passport and making a huge great splash over all media that would listen, he ran away to Asia and Australia, for two years. TWO FUCKING YEARS.

In my book, that’s cowardice. And as for not believing in what he was doing, bollocks. You joined the Army, you do what your told, when your told. Regardless of whether you believe in it or not. A Soldiers job is to carry out orders. In the old poem, Ours is to do and die, not to question why. He knew that when he joined the Army, he knew he would be asked, possibly to do something he didn’t agree with. Dont like that, Dont join the Army.

Joe Glenton, You sir are a coward.

Railways and S44

I was today stopped by Police Officers on an old railway bridge. I had taken a couple of train shots from the Bridge area, images of the bridge, and trains passing along it. They stopped me under the Section 44 rule, which is Anti Terrorism. This is the first time I have ever had dealings with the Police when using my camera, and it was really worrying.I felt like a criminal, and worried what people where thinking as they walked past. This is a bridge that’s on a major right of way, and very busy.

Apparently, all railway infrastructure, railways and equipment is monitored under section 44, this I didn’t know. I knew taking photos of places like Menwith Hill will gain some attention from the Police, but a lone bridge and a train? News to me.I was’nt on rail track property, i remained on a public right of way the whole time.

I fully complied with what I was told, and asked to do. However on reading Section 44, these officers did break the rules. They are allowed to ask you to empty your pockets, mine were searched. They took my camera and looked through the images. This is against policy, in that only trained forensic officers should handle equipment. They didnt delete any images off the camera, just looked.

I’m not going to make a fuss about what happened, but I do feel that people should know their rights when stopped under this. courtesy of Liberty, here are your rights under Section 44

YOUR RIGHTS UNDER SECTION 44
At the time

- The police can only give you a pat down, remove outer clothes (eg jacket, hat), search your bags and have you empty your pockets

Ø You do not have to give your name and address
Ø You do not have to explain why you are there
Ø You are not allowed to flee the search, but you are not required to be actively compliant. You are allowed to ‘go limp’ as passive resistance during the search if you wish not to comply
Ø There is no permission to collect DNA data during the search
Ø You do not have to comply with any attempt to photograph or record you
Ø Women cannot be touched by male police during these searches
Ø Make notes about the officers searching you – name, number and police force
Ø Note the time and the events preceding the search
Ø Note the specific wording used by the police to explain their authority to search you
Ø Ask the police for the reason that they are searching you. Specifically, are they searching for terrorists or are they simply trying to deter, delay or inconvenience you?

Afterwards
Ø Hold on to the Search Record or any other documentation the police give you (or note if you don’t receive one)
Ø Make brief notes about the search while you still remember all the details
Ø Do not write anything down on the day that you don’t want disclosed to the police. Police may search you again and be able to read anything that you have written down
Ø Please complete and submit Liberty’s search monitoring form
Ø Consider making a complaint to the Independent Police Complaints Commission
Ø Write to Lord Carlile, the independent monitor of the implementation of anti-terrorism legislation (Lord Carlile of Berriew QC, The House of Lords London SW1A 0AA)
Ø Consider pressing charges if the officers used unnecessary force during the search

The Police CANNOT require you to destroy or show them any photograph. To do so they have to obtain a Court Order. They are allowed to seize the camera but they would have to have some VERY good reasons to do so and when challenged in Court would almost certainly be unable to satisfy the Court that the power existed in the case of a photographer.

They are not allowed to interfere with the camera. or even switch it off. This must only be done by specially trained officers as stipulated by, and in accordance with, Home Office guidelines.
